MP2

In the 51st Collings & Herrin podcast, recorded for the first time ever on the professional podcast studio Richard bought and paid for while drunk before Christmas [pictured], we allow ourselves to be seduced by the sleek professionalism of the equipment and dispense with puerile jokes and humour and merely pontificate on free speech, for ages. OK, there's also a bit about the enraged, now-dead celebrity chimpanzee Travis, and Peter Mandelson's swear at Starbucks, and Hitler's table manners, and the Church Of England school teaching ten year olds "filth", and hate cleric Abu Qatada and the tabloids' demonisation of men with beards, and why Twitter is good/bad. You decide! (I'm all for doing it the old way on the MacBook, as the loading of the WAV file, which we eventually worked out how to convert to an MP3, took bloody ages. I had to stay round Richard's house for hours! He was getting quite crotchety with me, although that could have been the pint of Diet Coke and two caffeines. Or the fact that he hates me for leaving Twitter. Or that he blames me for the podcast studio not working, even though I didn't buy it.)

Not sure if it's related in anyway, but it's taking a hell of a long time to download this week. I've downloaded 9 other things whilst waiting. So I've not heard it yet, but, I like the old fashioned method. More natural, that's why I probably prefer your version of The Perfect 12. The rough cut.
Still, maybe I'm in the minority.
Have a good weekend.
Molonsin is today's word.

Congrats on getting the PodcastStudio working. Listened to the first 15 mins so far. Unfortunately my speakers are playing up, so it sounds rubbish!

Looking forward to the rest, hopefully with better speakers.

If I was being honest I'd say I couldn't tell the difference in quality between the pre and post podcast studio eras. Are you sure it's set up properly?

I think the glossy sound quality impacted the first 16mins of the show which was very interesting, but had barely a whiff of humour... ..picked up with the berating of Mr Pomp ...18.49 "f**k them, ... bees chuffs..." ... yes we are back on track... now I know what kind of people I am dealing with, as my boss loves to say....!

I just downloaded something called Switch, for free of course, which downloaded in seconds and converts files from anything to anything else, it seems. Nice one. (The podcast studio came with software but I have been unable to download the conversion programme they recommend. The actual software is Audacity, though.) I am about to listen back to it, so will be listening to the quality very carefully.

Here's my two-penneth, the quality sounds better (to me), but no, it's not professional studio quality. But it's not supposed to be, and it won't be, without a professional studio.
Better is good though, and if you want more better, I would try adding acoustic absorption (eg 50mm thick melamine foam works a treat though admittedly isn't very attractive) to Richards attic to cut the reverberation out.

Yours exceedingly boringly,

An Acoustic Engineer (no, really, I am)

Hi Andrew,
The sound quality seems the same - in fact I was listening to the end of #50 and it went onto #51 without me noticing!

I thought the quality was better, especially when the two of you were talking over it other, which tends to be most of the podcast!

Daim bar is Swedish and that's how you pronounce "Dime" in Swedish.
So I assume it's still supposed to be called Dime, they're just trying to save money on the packaging. Idiots.

You should be able to make the external mic and mixing desk thingymagigger work with garage band, so that you have the ease of using GB for the film with the supposed improvement in sound quality that the external audio equipment offers.
I do this for live recording stuff for our band (not for public consumption though) using a different input device....
I would imagine that you simply plug in the audio equipment to the mac, open GB, and (from the top of my head, I'm sat in front of a PC just now at work, and based on an older version of garageband I would imagine)click garage band, then settings (maybe options) then input options to change the input from "internal audio" (or similar) to what ever the podcast studio tell the computer it is called... It will then ask "are you sure, new drivers may be needed", and if you say yes, then it will switch over the inputs form the little internal mic to the podcast studio...

I think that's true anyway... feel free to contact me if you need more help, though I'm in no way an expert.

Andrew, iTunes can convert files into mp3 (and a multitude of formats). You don't need any extra software, i do this all the time for wav files that I have to process for my office.

Under the Advance menu there is an option to 'Create XYZ version'. This setting is based on teh preferences that you define under the 'General' Tab (see the 'import settings'), define them here and when you select the 'Create XYZ version' option it will convert any file already in iTunes to the new format (including bitrate and any other settings your 'bloke' needs).

Also I thought this week's podcast was good. I know RH thinks that no one above the age of 16 listens ;) but the last few weeks have kind of started to turn into juvinalia (?) - the 'Jesus Cock' episode was toe-curlingly infantile for me (sorry) and I had to cut it off. So while yesterday's didn't have the 'larfs' (although I chuckled for ages about Hamlet coming on stage and saying 'Hello' to the Audience) it was much more enjoyable.

i wonder if it's because you've got 'over' the fixation of doing them for a year or #50 or whatever it was and now you can concentrate back on reading the news and arguing about things.

Hi - Sounded very similar to me - Richard's shouts are still a bit distorted and frightening. Try a bit of soft knee compression or a limiter....or tell him not to shout ; )

Haven't listened to all of the cast yet, but I'm sure there was a period when Dime put 'Mide' on the wrappers.

My teenaged stoner brain was certain there was a conspiracy to confuse it, and Dime were part of the problem.

Hello.Um, I think a good part of the charm of a podcast recorded in someone's attic on their lap top is that it sounds like it's recorded on their lap top in their attic. Now I'm worried that putting that into words will somehow 'spoil the magic'. And I'm even more worried that this means I'm somehow a bit superstitious. Well, anyway: I like that it sounds like it's recorded on a lap top in an attic.

If anyone thinks the quality is too good you could re encode it using iTunes as a lower quality file.

Sound quality I mean. The quality of the jokes would always stay the same.

Andrew, I thought the slightly more sombre free speech element was one of the most interesting parts of the podcast to date. Two bright guys discussing important things with the occasional bumming gag thrown in - it's the future.

The audio quality is a little better, but not enough to spend hours making Richard ratty! I agree with others that your podcasts charm is in its simplicity and quality content. Keep up the good work, oh and thanks for reading out my email on 6 music years ago, (E&TBM vs The Cure, bunnymen any day!)

I did listen bakc and you, Sir, are correct, you did say marsupials... I feel foolish at best... Although I was half right, they're called koalas, not koala bears... You know what, I'm boring myself.

On another note, I'm looking forward to your audio book. I like having things talking into my ear.

These bumming gags are going to get me into trouble.

Chatting with a couple of friends about podcasts and I mention this podcast where 'one guy keeps talking about the other guy being bummed'

cue an awkward silent moment

"no really... it's very funny"

Daim/Dime - this is just another example of the Snickers/Marathon or Starburst/Opal Fruits phenomena.

It's about companies trying to create global trademarks. The only reason that Marathon (to use its correct name) was used rather than the Mars bar is that the Mars bar originated in the UK; the original confectionary bar sold by Mars in the US was the Milky Way, and the US Mars bar wasn't the same as ours. However, the bar that is wrongly known by some as Snickers existed everywhere, just requiring some name changes in a few territories to achieve global ubiquity.

Ditto the Dime/Daim bar.

Coca-Cola, I believe, was the first global trademark, universally known by the same name.

You're still making it twice as big as it should be by needlessly recording it in stereo...

I noticed the increase in quality. Ah if only it had been that good for the Lion Man story.

I would be nice to have it in stereo, you in one ear, Richard in the other...and it would be easier to hear whats being said when one of you talks over the other.

Whilst recording some old vinyl to mp3, I just realised Audacity automatically records in mono. You have to go into Edit/Preferences/Audio I/O and change it to 2 channels for FM Stereo style aural pleasure
