Fun

A four-hour epic today on 6 Music, as I filled in for both Jon Holmes and Lauren Laverne. I'm getting quite comfortable around the old place. Xanthe and Jon (different Jon) were the team, and we had a fun time. It's like riding a bike, I have found. I can't in all honesty build it up, or wrap up what's required of me in layers of mystique: it's playing some records in order and saying some words inbetween them, many of which have been sent in by listeners and are printed out on pieces of paper. Assuming you can press the news jingle at precisely half past the hour, it's a piece of cake. Which is why I'm so pleased to be doing it again after a pretty long lay-off.

I still feel the childish need to grab a pic off the studio webcam and post it up as evidence, as this is not a gig to take for granted. I had comedian Michael Legge in between 4 and 5pm, and the hour flew by in a flurry of anti-Latitude ranting, careful sidestepping around toilet details and embarrassing Robyn Hitchcock stories. I also had an interview I recorded last week with man from UNKLE James Lavelle, so that made life even easier. We had some biscuits and Minstrels in the studio, and a ready supply of peppermint tea (I bring my own mug in, which really makes a difference), and I was able to take input from text, email and Twitter. At one point I played one of my vinyl seven-inches, The Last Film by Kissing The Pink, and noted that their Wikipedia entry didn't specify where they came from, just "the United Kingdom." Paul Johnston emailed in with the extra detail "London." I suggested he add that to their Wikipedia entry, so he did, and within minutes, it was done. (This is one of the few disadvantages of the podcast, of course - the inevitable delay.) It would be nice if the radio and the podcast could exist side by side, as they compliment each other.

I called this entry Fun because the picture looks like we aren't having any at all, but we were.

And, because it was effectively two shows, it's in two bits on iPlayer.

I listened and it was excellent.

Only thing missing was Mr Herring to banter with, but maybe that would bring out your Mr Hyde side. Again.

Great choice of music too. Can we have 4 hours of Mr Collins every Saturday please Mister 6 Music?

Hi Andrew

I believe your Scum colleague Iain Lee is experimenting with live podcasting and/or taking calls on his Shindiggery Podcasts. You should have a word.

Speaking of colleagues, on the Marsha meets podcast Richard calls you both two mates and you also made him cry, that’s progress. Respect to Tina.

Regards

Craig

I hadn't heard the Funk and Soul Show for over a year and I'd forgotten how good it can be. So if for nothing else (and I don't mean there is nothing else), thanks for that. Especially since it meant I missed The Grumbleweeds on 7.

I think Kissing The Pink met at uni in London, so I don't know if they were actually from there. Or anywhere in particular.

Looking forward to the Age of Chance stuff...

why does bringing your own mug in make a difference?

What - the radio show goes "I say podcast old chap, you were in dazzling form today" and the podcast replies "Thank you radio show for those kind words. You were really rather good yourself if you don't mind my saying so. And you're looking great these days. Have you been working out?"

That sorta thing?

I'll err, get me coat...

I know what you mean about bringing in your own mug. Your beverage of choice can taste great in one mug/cup/vase and taste horrible in another.

Hope it didn't seem like I was emailing too much today. I partly did it to cover up the fact that I disappeared for an hour to watch the penultimate stage of the Tour de France, my favourite sporting event. I was cheering on Bradley Wiggins who is British, a bloody good cyclist and a bit of a mod!

I recall Kissing The Pink on TOTP and their "manic" performance, resembling a group of escapees from a mental home, killed the record's climb up the charts. I think I still have the 7" too.

I think at least one member of Kissing The Pink was from Scotland and another from either the Isle of Man or one of the Channel Islands but as they were formed in London, went to college together in London and lived in the same house in London it's safe to call them a London band. In the same way as Big Country are "from Dunfermline" even though none of them was even born in Scotland, let alone Fife.

Will the R2 show on listen again? It says not available. Maybe I should wait a bit.

Thank you for reading out my supermarket-based etiquette offering Andrew (conveyor belt divider-thingy). I'd wondered whether it was going to be read out and resigned myself to the fact that it wasn't when I heard it; provoked a most bizarre Morris Dance-style jig from me in my kitchen!

Enjoyed the show immensely, made the humdrum of Saturday housework all the more bearable. Look forward to next week's show.

Thanks for playing Babies for my new kittens too Andrew. We have two new little lives in the house and they are beautiful. Not sure about any of the names that were suggested though. Neither of them them look like a Jarvis either!

I tuned in expectin Lauren but wasn't dissapointed when your voice came out of the radio. Good show as always.

And, as a bonus, I've just discovered that I know someone involved in the Virgilio Anderson T-Shirt printing and I'm going to bloody well try and get myself one.

Anyone who plays "Wholly Humble Heart" on the radio deserves a medal...

(jumping in late... have been sans internet for a couple of weeks while away on holiday)

I listened. We were holidaying in France and the house we rent has a sat dish so we were able to sit by the pool with a Sky gnome, cold beers and sunshine while listening.

Bliss.

Was great to hear you on 6music again.
